British term for camera systems that read vehicle registration plates and check them against databases of stolen, uninsured or wanted vehicles. A national ANPR network logs tens of millions of reads a day in the UK.
Example: ANPR cameras on the M6 picked up the suspect's car heading north at 2 a.m.
Usage notes
The technology was developed in Britain in the late 1970s. ANPR also enforces London's congestion charge and ULEZ and many parking systems. Data is retained in a national database for a set period under police guidance.
