AfD stands for Alternative for Germany, a world government abbreviation.
German right-wing populist party, founded in 2013 in opposition to euro bailouts, that later focused on opposing immigration. It finished second in the February 2025 federal election with about 21 percent of the vote.
Example: AfD candidates performed strongly in the eastern states of Saxony and Thuringia.
Usage notes
Other parties have maintained a "firewall" refusing to govern with it. In May 2025 Germany's domestic intelligence agency classified the national party as a confirmed right-wing extremist organization, a designation the party challenged in court. The abbreviation comes from its German name, Alternative für Deutschland.
