990 stands for Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax (IRS Form 990), a tax abbreviation.
Annual information return that most tax-exempt organizations, including charities and foundations, must file, disclosing revenue, expenses, executive pay, governance and programs. Completed returns are public, making them a key source for researching nonprofits.
Example: Before donating, I read the charity's 990 to see how much it spends on fundraising.
Usage notes
Small organizations with gross receipts normally of $50,000 or less file the online Form 990-N "e-Postcard," mid-sized ones may use Form 990-EZ, and private foundations file Form 990-PF. Failing to file for three consecutive years automatically revokes tax-exempt status. ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer and Candid publish copies online.
