YoY stands for Year over year, an accounting abbreviation also used in measurement.
Comparison of a figure with the same period one year earlier, such as this quarter's revenue against the same quarter last year, expressed as a percentage change. It removes seasonal effects that distort comparisons with the immediately preceding period.
Example: Revenue rose 12 percent YoY to $3.4 billion, driven by growth in the cloud business.
Usage notes
Also written Y/Y, y/y or YOY; British publications often say "year on year." YoY is standard in earnings releases, economic data such as inflation and sales dashboards. Base effects matter: a strong YoY rise can simply reflect a weak period a year earlier, as many 2021 figures did after the 2020 pandemic lows.
