XBRL stands for eXtensible Business Reporting Language, an accounting abbreviation.

XML-based open standard for tagging financial data so that computers can read and compare financial statements automatically. Regulators such as the SEC and European authorities require listed companies to file reports with XBRL tags.

Example: Each number in the 10-K is tagged in inline XBRL so analysts can download the data directly.

Usage notes

The SEC phased in XBRL requirements from 2009 and later required inline XBRL, which embeds the tags in the human-readable document. The EU's European Single Electronic Format (ESEF) requires inline XBRL for listed companies' annual reports for periods from 2020. The standard is maintained by the nonprofit XBRL International.
