WUI stands for Wildland-urban interface, an emergency services abbreviation.
Zone where homes and other development meet or mix with undeveloped forest, brush or grassland, where wildfires pose the greatest risk to communities. Millions of US homes are in the WUI.
Example: Our town is entirely in the WUI, so defensible space inspections are mandatory.
Usage notes
Pronounced "woo-ee." Major WUI disasters include the 2018 Camp Fire, which destroyed most of Paradise, California, and the January 2025 fires in the Los Angeles area. Building codes for WUI areas require ember-resistant vents and fire-resistant materials. Firefighting there requires both structural and wildland tactics.
