USGS stands for United States Geological Survey, a US federal agency abbreviation.
Interior's science agency, which monitors earthquakes, volcanoes, streams and groundwater, maps the country and studies natural resources and hazards. It runs the national earthquake information center and operates the Landsat satellites with NASA.
Example: The USGS measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.1, centered 10 miles north of the city.
Usage notes
Congress created the USGS on March 3, 1879, and the explorer John Wesley Powell was its second director. Its topographic "quad" maps were a standard tool for hikers and engineers for more than a century. The "Did You Feel It?" website collects public reports of earthquake shaking. The agency is led by a Director.
