USAID stands for United States Agency for International Development, a US federal agency abbreviation.

Former independent agency that administered most US foreign economic and humanitarian aid, including global health, disaster relief and development programs. It was dismantled in 2025, and its remaining functions were absorbed by the State Department as of July 1, 2025.

Example: USAID-funded clinics in the region had provided HIV treatment to thousands of patients.

Usage notes

President John F. Kennedy created USAID in 1961 under the Foreign Assistance Act. Its work included carrying out PEPFAR programs, running famine early-warning systems and deploying disaster response teams. In early 2025 most of its grants and contracts were frozen or canceled and most staff were placed on leave, steps challenged in court.
