1. Unidentified anomalous phenomena

Science & Engineering · Astronomy & Space Abbreviations

US government term for observations in the air, space or sea that cannot be immediately identified, replacing the stigma-laden UFO in official reports. Military pilots' sensor videos and congressional hearings in the 2020s brought the term into the news.

Example: The AARO report found no evidence that any UAP represented extraterrestrial technology.

The term originally stood for unidentified aerial phenomena; Congress broadened "aerial" to "anomalous" in late 2022 to include objects underwater and in space. The Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) was established in 2022, and a NASA independent study team reported in 2023 that better data, not secrecy, was the main need.

2. Unlicensed assistive personnel

Medical · Healthcare Credential Abbreviations

Umbrella term for healthcare workers without a professional license, such as nursing assistants, patient care technicians and medication aides, who perform tasks delegated by licensed nurses.

Example: RN delegated ambulation and intake recording to UAP; reassessment remains RN duty.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing and ANA delegation guidelines describe what can safely be delegated: assessment, planning and evaluation stay with the nurse. Tasks must match the UAP's training and the patient's stability. State laws define allowed tasks.
