1. Uranium
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
Uranium (atomic number 92) is the heaviest element found in nature in substantial quantities and the fuel of nuclear power. Natural uranium is just 0.72% fissile uranium-235; power reactors typically use fuel enriched to about 3-5%, while weapons require far higher enrichment. Its slow radioactive decay helps heat Earth's interior.
Example: The fuel assemblies contain U enriched to 4.5% uranium-235.
Martin Heinrich Klaproth identified uranium in the mineral pitchblende in 1789 and named it after the planet Uranus, discovered eight years earlier. Eugène-Melchior Péligot isolated the metal in 1841, and Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity in 1896 using uranium salts. Depleted uranium, left over from enrichment, is dense enough to be used in armor-piercing ammunition and aircraft counterweights.
2. You
Texting & Internet Slang · Texting and Chat Abbreviations
Single-letter homophone for "you," one of the most common texting shortcuts since the SMS era. Appears in phrases like "c u," "love u" and "r u ok?"
Example: Did u see the game last night? Unreal ending.
Prince used "U" in song titles such as "Nothing Compares 2 U" (1985), helping it feel stylish long before texting. Many readers see it as lazy or childish in professional writing. Autocorrect often fixes it, so its use is now partly a style choice.
3. Unit
Medical · Prescription Abbreviations
Abbreviation for units, the measure used for insulin, heparin and some other biologic drugs. It is on The Joint Commission "Do Not Use" list because a handwritten U has been read as a zero, a 4 or "cc", causing tenfold or larger insulin overdoses.
Example: Old order "insulin glargine 10U" could be read as 100 units; it now reads 10 units.
The Joint Commission bans "U" and "u" and requires "unit" to be written. ISMP adds that when "U" is run together with the number, "4U" can become "40". Insulin concentrations such as U-100 and U-500 printed by manufacturers are an accepted exception, but doses in orders should always say "units".
4. Universal
Arts & Entertainment · Film, Television and Theater Abbreviations
British BBFC film rating meaning suitable for all audiences, generally ages 4 and over. U films should contain nothing likely to upset young children.
Example: The animated feature was rated U and suitable for all.
U is one of the BBFC's oldest categories. A separate "Uc" category for very young children was used on videos until 2009. Some other countries, including India, use U as well.
