TUPE stands for Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations, a human resources abbreviation.
UK rules that automatically move employees, with their existing contracts, service and terms, to a new employer when a business is sold or a service is outsourced or brought back in house. Dismissals because of the transfer are generally unfair.
Example: The catering staff will transfer to the new contractor under TUPE on 1 April.
Usage notes
The current regulations date from 2006 and implement the EU Acquired Rights Directive; they remained in force after Brexit. Pronounced "tyoo-pee."
