TSDB stands for Time series database, a data & database abbreviation.
A database optimized for timestamped data points, such as server metrics, sensor readings and stock prices, with fast ingestion, compression and time-based queries like averages per minute. InfluxDB, TimescaleDB and Prometheus's storage engine are examples.
Example: Each sensor writes a reading every second to the TSDB, and Grafana graphs the last 24 hours.
Usage notes
Time series data is mostly appended and queried by time range, so these databases compress heavily and drop old data automatically through retention policies. Downsampling keeps long-term trends while discarding fine detail. Infrastructure monitoring and IoT drove their growth in the 2010s.
