TIS stands for Time in service, a military term abbreviation.
Total length of a member's military service, counted from the pay entry base date, which determines eligibility for promotion, pay raises within a grade and retirement.
Example: You need 36 months TIS before you're eligible for automatic promotion to specialist.
Usage notes
Basic pay rises with time in service as well as grade, so two members of the same rank can earn different amounts. Twenty years of service is the traditional threshold for a military retirement.
