SDS-PAGE stands for Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, a biology abbreviation.
Laboratory technique that separates proteins by size. The detergent SDS unfolds proteins and gives them a uniform negative charge, so in an electric field they migrate through a polyacrylamide gel at speeds determined by their molecular weight, with small proteins moving fastest.
Example: SDS-PAGE showed a single band at about 55 kDa, confirming the purified protein was intact.
Usage notes
Ulrich Laemmli's 1970 Nature paper describing the buffer system is among the most cited scientific papers ever published. Gels are stained with Coomassie blue or silver, or transferred to a membrane for Western blotting. A ladder of proteins of known size runs alongside samples for comparison.
