SDLT stands for Stamp Duty Land Tax, a tax abbreviation.

Tax paid by buyers of land and property in England and Northern Ireland, charged in bands on portions of the price, with surcharges for additional homes and non-UK residents and relief for first-time buyers. It must be paid within 14 days of completion.

Example: Our solicitor added the SDLT to the completion statement.

Usage notes

Introduced in 2003 to replace traditional stamp duty on land transfers. Scotland uses the Land and Buildings Transaction Tax and Wales the Land Transaction Tax. Temporarily higher thresholds expired at the end of March 2025, prompting a rush of completions beforehand.
