PWFA stands for Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, a US law abbreviation.

Law requiring employers with 15 or more employees to provide reasonable accommodations for known limitations related to pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, unless doing so would cause undue hardship. Accommodations can include extra breaks, seating or temporary reassignment.

Example: Under the PWFA, her employer let her sit during shifts and skip heavy lifting.

Usage notes

It was enacted in December 2022 as part of a year-end spending law and took effect on June 27, 2023. The EEOC issued final regulations in April 2024. It filled a gap left by the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which required equal treatment but did not itself require accommodations.
