Catheter ablation that electrically disconnects the pulmonary veins from the left atrium, removing the most common triggers of atrial fibrillation. Energy is delivered by radiofrequency heat, cryoballoon freezing or pulsed field ablation.

Example: PVI with pulsed field ablation; all four veins isolated, discharged the same day.

Michel Haïssaguerre's group in Bordeaux showed in 1998 that triggers in the pulmonary veins start most atrial fibrillation, laying the foundation for PVI. Success rates are highest in paroxysmal AF. Pulsed field ablation, approved in the US from late 2023, uses electrical fields that target heart tissue while largely sparing the esophagus and nerves.

Measure published by The Cook Political Report that shows how strongly a congressional district or state leans toward one party compared with the nation as a whole, written as R+5 or D+12. It is based on results of the two most recent presidential elections.

Example: The seat has a PVI of R+3, making it a top target for Democrats.

Charlie Cook introduced the index in 1997, letting analysts compare districts regardless of who holds them. A district rated "EVEN" voted in line with the national average. New ratings are released after each presidential election and after redistricting changes district lines.
