CategoriesMedical

PT/INR stands for Prothrombin time with international normalized ratio, a laboratory test abbreviation.

Standard order and report pairing in which the laboratory returns the clotting time in seconds alongside its normalized ratio. It is checked before surgery and invasive procedures, to evaluate bleeding or liver function, and above all to adjust warfarin doses, often weekly or monthly through an anticoagulation clinic.

Example: Pre-op labs: CBC, BMP, type and screen, PT/INR; hold warfarin five days before surgery.

Usage notes

Fingerstick point-of-care meters allow PT/INR testing in clinics and at home, and patients on long-term warfarin can self-test and phone in results. Meter readings can differ from a venous laboratory sample, especially at higher INRs, so very high values are usually confirmed with a venous draw. Also written PT-INR or "PT and INR" on order sets.
