1. Proto-Indo-European
Writing & Everyday · Grammar and Dictionary Abbreviations
Names the reconstructed ancestor of the Indo-European languages, including English, Latin, Greek, Sanskrit and Persian. Etymological dictionaries cite PIE roots marked with an asterisk, because they are not directly attested.
Example: Words as different as "foot," "pedal" and "podium" all descend from the PIE root *ped- "foot."
PIE was probably spoken several thousand years before the common era; its homeland is debated, though the steppe hypothesis is the most widely accepted. Linguists reconstruct it from regular sound correspondences such as Grimm's law, which explains why English "foot" matches Latin pes, pedis. The asterisk marks every reconstructed, unattested form.
2. Problem, Intervention, Evaluation
Medical · Medical Documentation Abbreviations
Nursing charting method that groups notes under numbered problems, recording the intervention for each problem and an evaluation of the outcome. Assessment data are kept on separate flowsheets.
Example: PIE note #2: P impaired mobility; I ambulated 50 ft with walker; E tolerated, no dizziness.
Developed as an alternative to the separate care plan, since the problem list and notes together serve as the plan. Problems are often labeled with nursing diagnoses. Fewer hospitals use pure PIE charting today because electronic records combine care plans and flowsheets.
