PCORI stands for Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, a medical research abbreviation.

Independent nonprofit created by the Affordable Care Act in 2010 to fund comparative effectiveness research that helps patients, clinicians and others choose among health care options. Patients and other stakeholders take part in setting priorities and reviewing proposals.

Example: PCORI funded the pragmatic trial comparing two diabetes management strategies.

Usage notes

Funding comes largely from a trust fund that includes fees on health insurance plans, and Congress reauthorized it in 2019. By law PCORI may not use cost per QALY as a threshold to establish what care is recommended. Pronounced "pa-CORE-ee".
