P&ID stands for Piping and instrumentation diagram, an engineering abbreviation.
Detailed schematic of a process plant showing piping, valves, pumps, vessels, instruments and control loops with standardized symbols and tag numbers. P&IDs are the master documents for designing, building, operating and safely modifying chemical plants, refineries, water treatment works and power stations.
Example: Check the P&ID before isolating the pump to confirm which valves must be locked closed.
Usage notes
Instrument symbols and tags such as FIC-101 (flow indicating controller) follow the ISA-5.1 standard. P&IDs are the basis of HAZOP safety studies. The ampersand is part of the abbreviation; the drawing is distinct from a process flow diagram (PFD), which shows only major equipment and flows.
