1. Obstructive sleep apnea

Medical · Respiratory Abbreviations

Sleep disorder in which the upper airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, causing pauses in breathing, oxygen drops and frequent awakenings. Symptoms include loud snoring, witnessed apneas, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness, and it raises the risk of hypertension, atrial fibrillation, stroke and car crashes.

Example: Severe OSA, AHI 42 with nadir SpO2 78%; CPAP at 10 cm H2O ordered.

A 2019 analysis estimated that nearly 1 billion adults worldwide have OSA, most undiagnosed. Severity is graded by the apnea-hypopnea index: 5 to 14 mild, 15 to 29 moderate, 30 or more severe. CPAP is first-line, with oral appliances, weight loss, positional therapy and hypoglossal nerve stimulation as alternatives; tirzepatide was approved in 2024 for moderate to severe OSA with obesity. The STOP-BANG questionnaire screens for it.

2. On-shelf availability

Business & Finance · E-commerce & Retail Abbreviations

Percentage of time a product is present and available on the store shelf when shoppers look for it, the positive counterpart of the out-of-stock rate and a common metric in supplier-retailer scorecards.

Example: The supplier's OSA target is 98% across all stores.

Products can show as in stock in the system yet be missing from the shelf because they sit in the backroom, so OSA is often measured by shelf audits or image recognition.

3. Order of Saint Augustine

Religion · Religious Title Abbreviations

Augustinian friars belong to an order formed in 1256 by uniting groups of hermits who followed the Rule of St. Augustine. Pope Leo XIV, elected in 2025, is an Augustinian.

Martin Luther was an Augustinian friar before the Reformation, and geneticist Gregor Mendel was an Augustinian friar and abbot in Brno. From the Latin Ordo Sancti Augustini. Several other congregations, such as the Augustinians of the Assumption (AA), share the name.
