Brain, spinal cord, spine and peripheral nerve surgery, treating brain tumors, aneurysms, head and spinal trauma, hydrocephalus and degenerative spine disease, and using surgery for some epilepsy and movement disorders. US neurosurgery residency lasts seven years, one of the longest of any specialty.
Example: NSGY recommends repeat head CT in six hours and holding anticoagulation.
Usage notes
Also written NSG, NS or "neurosurg"; NSGY avoids confusion with NS for normal saline. Certification is through the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Harvey Cushing, working in the early 20th century, is regarded as the father of modern neurosurgery. Endovascular neurosurgery overlaps with interventional neuroradiology.
