NPDR stands for Nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Earlier stage of diabetic retinopathy with microaneurysms, dot-blot hemorrhages, hard exudates and cotton wool spots but no new blood vessel growth. It is graded mild, moderate or severe depending on the extent of these changes.
Example: Severe NPDR OD by 4-2-1 rule; close follow-up every 2–3 months, discuss treatment.
Usage notes
Severe NPDR is identified by the "4-2-1 rule": hemorrhages in all four retinal quadrants, venous beading in two or more, or intraretinal microvascular abnormalities in one or more. Patients with severe NPDR have a high risk of progressing to proliferative disease within a year. Vision can be normal until macular edema develops.
