NMFC stands for National Motor Freight Classification, a logistics, supply chain & trade abbreviation.

Standard that groups commodities into 18 freight classes, from 50 to 500, based on density, handling, stowability and liability, used to price LTL shipments in North America.

Example: The NMFC lookup puts our foam pillows in class 250, which explains the price.

Usage notes

Published by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, which also assigns SCAC codes. A major 2025 update moved many items to classes based mainly on density.
