LUL stands for Left upper lobe, a respiratory abbreviation.
Upper lobe of the left lung, which includes the lingula, a tongue-shaped portion that corresponds to the right middle lobe. The left lung has only two lobes because the heart occupies space on that side.
Example: LUL lobectomy via VATS for stage IA adenocarcinoma.
Usage notes
Pneumonia or collapse of the lingula blurs the left heart border on a frontal chest x-ray, mirroring right middle lobe disease. Left upper lobe collapse produces a characteristic "veil-like" haze. Surgeons may perform a lingula-sparing upper division segmentectomy instead of a full lobectomy for small tumors.
