LBD stands for Lewy body dementia, a neurology abbreviation.

Umbrella term covering two related conditions caused by Lewy body deposits: dementia with Lewy bodies, in which cognitive decline comes first, and Parkinson's disease dementia, which develops after years of established Parkinson's. It is the second or third most common type of degenerative dementia.

Example: Family support group for caregivers of people living with LBD meets monthly.

Usage notes

The "one-year rule" separates the two: dementia beginning before or within a year of parkinsonism suggests DLB, while dementia after more than a year of Parkinson's is classed as Parkinson's disease dementia. Patient groups such as the Lewy Body Dementia Association use LBD as the inclusive term. Symptoms overlap with both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, contributing to misdiagnosis.
