LAGB stands for Laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, a surgical abbreviation.
Bariatric procedure placing an inflatable silicone band around the top of the stomach, adjusted through a port under the skin to control food intake. Once common, it has largely been abandoned because of modest weight loss and frequent removals.
Example: History of LAGB in 2009, removed in 2016 for slippage; now evaluating for sleeve.
Usage notes
Widely known by the brand name Lap-Band, which received FDA approval in 2001. Long-term studies found high rates of band erosion, slippage and reoperation. Many former band patients later convert to sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass.
