IXP stands for Internet exchange point, a networking abbreviation.

A facility where internet service providers, content companies and cloud networks connect to exchange traffic directly, usually across a shared switching platform, instead of paying an upstream provider. IXPs make regional traffic cheaper and faster.

Example: Peering at the local IXP cut our transit bill and shaved 20 ms off traffic to the big streaming services.

Usage notes

Also called an IX or internet exchange. Large exchanges include DE-CIX in Frankfurt, AMS-IX in Amsterdam and LINX in London. Networks usually peer at IXPs without payment. Countries without a local exchange often route domestic traffic abroad and back, adding cost and delay.
