ILE stands for Intravenous lipid emulsion, a pharmacy abbreviation.
Fat emulsion given IV as part of parenteral nutrition to provide calories and essential fatty acids. Products are based on soybean, olive, MCT or fish oils, for example Intralipid, SMOFlipid and Omegaven.
Example: ILE 20% 250 mL over 10 hours three times weekly with PN.
Usage notes
In 2018 the FDA approved fish-oil-based Omegaven for children with PN-associated cholestasis. High-dose 20% lipid emulsion is also the antidote ("lipid rescue") for local anesthetic systemic toxicity, typically 1.5 mL/kg as a bolus. Lipid infusions are a growth medium for microbes, so hang times are limited to 12 hours when infused separately.
