HLC stands for Higher Learning Commission, an academic abbreviation.
Largest US institutional accreditor, covering degree-granting colleges and universities in 19 states across the Midwest, Great Plains and Southwest, from Arizona to West Virginia. It was formerly part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Example: The college's HLC accreditation was reaffirmed after a comprehensive evaluation visit.
Usage notes
Since 2020 the US Department of Education no longer limits institutional accreditors to geographic regions, so institutions may switch to another recognized accreditor. HLC uses ten-year "Open Pathway" and "Standard Pathway" cycles with mid-cycle reviews.
