GTPS stands for Greater trochanteric pain syndrome, a musculoskeletal & rheumatology abbreviation.
Lateral hip pain over the bony prominence of the femur, usually caused by tendinopathy of the gluteus medius and minimus rather than true bursitis. It is common in women aged 40 to 60 and worsens with lying on the affected side, stairs and prolonged standing.
Example: Lateral hip pain, tender greater trochanter, pain on single-leg stance: GTPS, start gluteal loading program.
Usage notes
Long called trochanteric bursitis, the name changed as imaging showed that bursal inflammation is often absent. Education and progressive exercise outperformed corticosteroid injection at one year in the LEAP trial (2018). Large tendon tears may need surgical repair.
