GITS stands for Gastrointestinal therapeutic system, a pharmacy abbreviation.
Osmotic push-pull tablet design used for once-daily drugs such as nifedipine (Procardia XL) and glipizide (Glucotrol XL), releasing drug at a nearly constant rate as the tablet passes through the gut.
Example: Glipizide XL (GITS) 5 mg with breakfast; ghost tablet in stool is expected.
Usage notes
GITS is a variant of the osmotic pump technology also used in OROS products. The near-zero-order release avoids the sharp blood-pressure drop seen with short-acting nifedipine, which is no longer recommended for hypertension.
