CategoriesMedical

FeNO stands for Fractional exhaled nitric oxide, a respiratory abbreviation.

Breath test measuring nitric oxide in exhaled air, in parts per billion, a marker of type 2 (eosinophilic) airway inflammation. High values support an asthma diagnosis and predict response to inhaled corticosteroids.

Example: FeNO 68 ppb with variable airflow obstruction supports asthma; start ICS.

Usage notes

The American Thoracic Society (2011) considers values above 50 ppb in adults high and below 25 ppb low. Smoking lowers readings, while recent eating of nitrate-rich foods and viral infections can raise them. The test takes a few minutes and requires a steady exhalation. Capitalization varies (FENO, FeNO).
