ECO stands for Engineering change order, an engineering abbreviation.
Formal document authorizing a change to a released design, such as a part's dimensions, material, drawing or supplier, and describing what will change, why and how existing stock will be handled. ECOs keep drawings, BOMs and production consistent.
Example: ECO 2147 changes the fastener material to stainless steel effective with serial number 5000.
Usage notes
A typical process runs from an engineering change request (ECR) proposing a change, through review and an ECO approving it, to an engineering change notice (ECN) informing affected departments, though companies use the terms differently. Change control is required in regulated industries such as aerospace and medical devices.
