Dy stands for Dysprosium, a chemical element abbreviation.
Electric vehicle motors and wind turbine generators rely on dysprosium (element 66), added to neodymium magnets so they keep their strength at high operating temperatures. That role makes it one of the most strategically important rare earths. It also absorbs neutrons and is used in some nuclear control materials.
Example: Grain-boundary diffusion cuts the Dy content of each motor magnet without sacrificing heat resistance.
Usage notes
Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran discovered dysprosium in 1886 after painstaking separation of holmium oxide, and named it from Greek dysprositos (hard to get at). Pure metal was not obtained until the 1950s, when ion-exchange separation was developed. Mining is concentrated in China and Myanmar, which drives recycling and substitution research.
