COPPA stands for Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, a US law abbreviation.

Requires websites, apps and online services directed to children under 13, or that knowingly collect data from them, to obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information and to post clear privacy policies. The Federal Trade Commission enforces it.

Example: The game asks for a birth date at signup so it can comply with COPPA.

Usage notes

Enacted in 1998, its FTC rule took effect in 2000 and was updated in 2013 and again in 2025. The 13-year threshold explains why most social networks set 13 as their minimum age. In 2019 Google and YouTube paid a record $170 million to settle COPPA charges with the FTC and New York's attorney general.
