BOOP stands for Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia, a respiratory abbreviation.
Former name for cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, a steroid-responsive condition in which granulation tissue fills small airways and alveoli. The term still appears in older charts, radiology reports and patient histories.
Example: Remote history of BOOP treated with prednisone in 2004, no recurrence.
Usage notes
The name was popularized by Gary Epler and colleagues in 1985. International consensus classifications replaced it with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia because the airway component is minor and because bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome, a form of chronic rejection after lung transplant, behaves very differently and does not respond to steroids.
