AUP stands for Acceptable use policy, a contract abbreviation.
Rules defining what users may and may not do with a network, platform, cloud service or employer's computer systems, such as bans on spam, malware, illegal content and unauthorized security testing. It is usually incorporated by reference into terms of service or employment policies.
Example: Running a cryptocurrency miner on company laptops violates the AUP and is grounds for discipline.
Usage notes
Cloud and hosting providers reserve the right to suspend accounts that breach their AUP without waiting for a court order. US schools and libraries adopt internet-use policies partly to qualify for federal E-rate discounts. Because providers can change AUPs unilaterally, business customers often negotiate for notice of material updates.
