ANZUS stands for Australia, New Zealand, United States Security Treaty, an international organization abbreviation.

Security treaty signed in 1951 by Australia, New Zealand and the United States, committing them to consult and act to meet common dangers in the Pacific. It remains the foundation of the US-Australia alliance.

Example: Australia invoked ANZUS for the first time after the September 11 attacks.

Usage notes

The United States suspended its treaty obligations toward New Zealand in 1986 after New Zealand banned nuclear-armed and nuclear-powered ships from its ports. The treaty was invoked for the only time in 2001. Annual AUSMIN talks between US and Australian ministers grew out of the alliance.
