ANOVA stands for Analysis of variance, a statistics abbreviation.
A family of methods that test whether the means of three or more groups differ, by comparing variance between groups with variance within groups through an F-test. One-way ANOVA has one grouping factor and two-way ANOVA two.
Example: A one-way ANOVA found that fertilizer type affected yield, F(3, 36) = 5.2, p = .004.
Usage notes
Ronald Fisher developed ANOVA in the 1920s for agricultural experiments at Rothamsted Experimental Station in England. A significant result shows that at least one mean differs but not which, so post hoc tests such as Tukey's HSD follow. It assumes normal residuals, equal variances and independent observations.
